History of the City Museum
The Municipal Museum was founded at the end of the 19th century from the large estate of the Jewish art and antiquities collector Pieter Lopez Suasso, who lived in Amsterdam all his life. The museum building was built according to the ideas of the Dutch architect Adriaan Willem Weissman in the architectural style of the Neo-Renaissance. Initially, visitors were shown exceptional furnishings from old Amsterdam canal houses from past centuries.
In addition, visitors could see former business premises, such as the furnishings from an old municipal pharmacy. In the 40s, parts of the collection were moved to other museums. The idea was to build an art collection of contemporary Dutch painters, for which free exhibition space was needed.
An extensive Van Gogh collection was the starting signal for the museum’s current focus on art and design objects. Over the years, all the historical home furnishings collected up to that point were removed, and the museum established itself as the first port of call for modern art. In the 1980s and 1990s, the then-directors Edy de Wilde and Rudi Fuchs expanded the museum with international art exhibits. In 2003, the museum closed its doors for the time being due to pending renovations. A new building complex, based on the idea of the Benthem Crouwel company, was built.
The reconstruction was delayed, and the costs for the conversion cracked the 4 million euro mark. The Volker Wessels construction group completed the building project successfully, and Queen Beatrix reopened the museum in September 2012. Since then, thousands of visitors worldwide have visited the art museum annually to view the Stedelijk collection.

Waiting times
A wait at the museum’s entrance is expected as in any other museum of a European metropolis. Perhaps not as spectacular as at the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum. The souvenir store at the Stedelijk Museum
The museum also houses a well-stocked souvenir store. The store is a branch of the well-known Amsterdam bookstore Walther König. Their assortment is comprised of a wide selection of international design, art, and notable photo books.

The museum is located at Paulus Potterstraat 13 in the center of the Dutch metropolis of Amsterdam. Drivers will hardly find suitable parking spaces here. The best place to park your car is Q-Park Museumplein, Van Baerlestraat 33b, 1071 AP AMSTERDAM, or book the nearest Mobypark parking lot.
Take Tram 2, 3, 5, or 12 from the Central Station and get off at the stop at Van Baerlestraat. Lines 3, 5, 12, 16, and 24 also stop at the Museumplein stop, close to the main entrance to the museum.

The Stedelijk Museum is near the Van Gogh Museum and the world-famous Rijksmuseum. Visits here can be combined very well. Since the latter two museums also constantly have a high number of visitors, it is also recommended to purchase tickets in advance.
