Tour of Madame Tussauds

Tour of Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussauds is an interactive exhibition. The wax figures cannot be viewed behind barriers but can also be touched. At Madame Tussauds in Amsterdam, visitors can immerse themselves in another life for a few hours as they become part of the glittering world of the rich and famous.

You’ll feel at a Hollywood party when you sit down for a cup of coffee with George Clooney, shake hands with Sean Connery as he savours a glass of Scotch whiskey, or meet Brad Pitt on the red carpet. Visitors can go shopping with Jennifer Lopez or try out their talent on the catwalk with a real-life Anna Wintour looking on. This area is particularly popular with young women, where they meet supermodels such as Doutzen Kroes and Kate Moss.

The most popular photo motif is the Dutch royal family, and Maxima and William Alexander are right in the centre of it. They look festive, just as we know them. The aristocratic tour continues when visitors meet the legendary Lady Diana. This beautiful and tall woman is also impressive in wax. One could almost overlook Lady Gaga as the gaze moves on to Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande. A lovely David Beckham seems to be waving at the visitors, and Elvis has been brought back to life.

What can you see in detail?

Each wax figure is lovingly and realistically modelled and arranged in the appropriate setting. Celebrities usually sport in person to realise this lifelike appearance. There are numerous opportunities for funny souvenir photos. Lie on the couch with Robbie Williams, dance a moonwalk with Michael Jackson, and pat John F. Kennedy on the shoulder. While Freddy Mercury is almost a relic from the past, Katy Perry and Gwen Stefani are in the spotlight. With a blonde wig and a white dress on the hot air vent, you’ll feel like Marilyn Monroe in year 7.

The Dutch artists Rembrandt van Rijn, Vincent van Gogh, and Piet Mondriaan are represented in their I am Art section. Creating your work of art in Herman Brood’s workshop or getting lost in a painting by Escher or Rembrandt is excellent fun. Visitors can get up close and personal with artists like Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso.

In the film and comic book heroes section, children have lots of fun with Princess Fiona from Shrek, Captain America, and E.T. Indiana Jones proudly presents his collection of treasure chests. The sports room features personalities like Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and Lance Armstrong. Among the political personalities, the charismatic Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, and the most powerful woman in the world, Angela Merkel, are impressive. The pirate section is remarkably realistic, so parents should keep a close eye on children under 12.

Practical tips

✅ Luggage storage – For understandable security reasons, taking large bags, suitcases, or rucksacks into Madame Tussauds is prohibited. A luggage storage facility is near Amsterdam Central Station for more oversized luggage. You can also leave your luggage at Lockerpoint Luggage Storage Amsterdam, Damrak 247, about 300 metres away.

✅ Pushchair – It is permitted to take pushchairs or buggies into Madame Tussauds. However, it should be noted that there are some stairs in the building. It is not possible to drop off or store the pushchair.

✅ Access for people with disabilities – In principle, people dependent on a walker or wheelchair are always welcome at Madame Tussauds. To ensure that the building can be evacuated quickly in the event of an emergency, there are strict fire brigade regulations. This means that only two wheelchair users are allowed in the exhibition simultaneously. We therefore advise you to book in advance.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with Madame Tussaud Amsterdam directly at +31 20 52 21010 or send an e-mail to info@madametussauds.nl.

✅ Taking animals with you – Animals are not permitted in the wax museum. Unfortunately, this also applies to guide dogs.

✅ Visit duration – According to Madame Tussauds Amsterdam, the average time spent in the wax museum is around 75 minutes. However, if you want to be photographed with every idol, this can quickly turn into 2 hours. There is no restriction on the visiting time.

✅ Touching the wax figures – You can touch the characters. Direct contact with your favorite star, icon, or the world’s influential people is allowed.

Photography

Photography - Madame Tussauds

Photography is allowed. As a visitor to Madame Tussauds, you can take as many photos of every figure everywhere as you like. So remember your camera if you want your picture taken in the Mona Lisa painting, for example. The only exceptions are the reception and private rooms. No photos may be taken here for security reasons.

Professional photographers: You will be photographed directly on a wax figure and can buy the best-quality picture. There is also the option to purchase a key ring or glass cube – a nice souvenir of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam and its celebrities.

Souvenir Shop

Souvenir Shop - Madame Tussauds

Of course, there is also the usual souvenir shop. It is a large shop where you are sure to find a souvenir of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam or the Dutch canal city.

My impression of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam

A visit to this interactive exhibition is worthwhile and is an entertaining and varied pastime. Nowhere else do visitors have the opportunity to take part in the lives of celebrities for a short time? When else can you go shopping with Jennifer Lopez, discuss with Barack Obama, or drink whisky with Sean Connery?

The most famous figures include politicians and influential personalities such as Angela Merkel and the Dalai Lama. The festively dressed Dutch royal family is just as impressive as legendary figures from the past, such as Lady Diana, Freddy Mercury, and John F. Kennedy.

For young people, Justin Bieber is one of the most sought-after photo subjects, incredibly attractive with a blonde matte and a bare upper body with a six-pack. Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga are personalities who are still successfully in the spotlight and with whom everyone likes to take selfies. Dutch artists such as Rembrandt are also represented, so Madame Tussauds also pays tribute to its great past.

What is the best way to get to the wax museum?

📍 Here is the exact address of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam: Dam 20, 1012 NP Amsterdam.

This is centrally located on Dam Square, the main square in the Dutch capital.

The exhibition is located on the upper floor of the Peek & Cloppenburg department store and is therefore very easy to find. Pedestrians can easily find their way around. Amsterdam Central Station is only 10 minutes away.

It’s a nice walk from Amsterdam city centre across the Damrak to the Dam. The department stores’ with the wax museum are located between the Kalverstraat and the Rokin and cannot be overlooked.

✅ Tip: The Royal Palace is also located next door. Visits can, therefore, be easily combined. Tickets with an audio guide are already available here.

Dam Square is one of the most essential sights in Amsterdam and is also served by many trams.

🚆 Tram lines 2, 11, 12, 13, and 17: stop Magna Plaza/Dam
🚆 Tram lines 4, 14, and 24: Bijenkorf/Dam stop

Madame Tussauds can also be reached by car. The parking situation in the Dutch metropolis is always challenging, but a few multi-story car parks are nearby. The best parking place is in the multi-story car park at De Bijenkorf department stores, Beursstraat 15, 1012 JW Amsterdam. From here, it is only a 5-minute walk to the wax museum.
