The wax museum is very easy to find. It is located on the upper floor of the Peek & Cloppenburg department store and is therefore very easy to find. Pedestrians need only 10 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. After a nice walk across the Damrak to the Dam, you can’t miss the museum.

History of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam

Madame Tussaud’s real name was Marie Grosholtz, and she was born in Strasbourg on December 7, 1761. Her father was an Anglo-Saxon officer. Marie spent her childhood and youth in Bern, Switzerland. There, she met Dr. Philipp Curtis. The wax modeller introduced Marie to his craft. None other than Madame Marie Elisabeth, sister of the French King Louis XVI, was the inspiration for the future of the young wax modeller. The aristocratic lady was so impressed by young Marie’s talent that she gave her a teaching position at Versailles Palace. In her new place of work, Marie modelled the heads of critical noble representatives and their relatives.

She came to her later name through marriage to the engineer Francois Tussaud from Burgundy. Meanwhile, she inherited a wax figure exhibition from her uncle, with whom she moved to London in 1802. She spent 27 years travelling with her wax figures before opening a permanent collection in London’s Baker Street in 1835. At that time, she was 73 years old. In 1842, she created her likeness in wax as the last figure of the exhibition. In 1850, at 88, she died where her collection was now at home, in London’s Baker Street. The wax figure of Madame Tussaud looks like a nice little granny next door with a black hood.

The idea of opening a wax museum in Amsterdam returns to the great-great-granddaughter Josefine Tussaud. The businesswoman was born in 1900 and died in 1985. The museum was founded by the Tussaud Group on February 19, 1970, and opened to the public a year later. This museum was the first wax museum outside the United Kingdom. Completed in 1917, the building is in downtown Amsterdam near the Royal Palace.
